Letter 3: Thank you

Letter 3: Thank you

By Alex Ramos
Creative Director and Editor, Nonfiction

Hello,

Welcome to Sunstroke Press’ newsletter.

We’re delighted to announce that our inaugural release, Diaries of a Wet Bird by Sophia Cutino, is out. It’s available for purchase over on our online store. It shouldn’t take more than a few days to ship out from our little studio in New York, but we do only have one person preparing mail, so we appreciate any patience you could extend as we work through orders. If you have received your copy, we’d love to know what you think! Send us an email or tag us in an Instagram story or post.

We also want to offer a big, warm thank you to everyone who attended our release party for Diaries of a Wet Bird in Brooklyn last month. Thank you to Cherry On Top for hosting us and pouring delicious wine all night, to Rambler Magazine for collaborating with us on the event and to our artists, Juno Roome, Roísín McKeown and Angelina Zaphyria, for offering their time and talent. Regardless of whether you dropped by just to say hello and pick up a book, or stayed all night to enjoy the performances, we are so grateful.

The turnout for the event was overwhelming and not what we expected at all. In fact, we struggled planning for the event just a week shy of it happening; we had to switch dates, coordinate performers and accommodate last minute equipment requests… I threw in an electric guitar cable in my suitcase — filled to the brim with layers and winter wools — just in case we needed it. Birdy reassured me that “there has got to be a working cable in New York City,” and yeah, there was. Again, thank you very much for joining us.

By the way, the release party was the first time Birdy (Sunstroke Press' Managing Director) and I (Alex) had met in real life, after a whopping five years of online creative partnership. Can you believe that? Check us out in the photos below.

With gratitude,
Alex

A few bookmarks lay under a handbag on a table, with a tea candle to the side.
Alex and Birdy hug for the photo.

Praise for Diaries of a Wet Bird

We are delighted by the reviews we've received on the book so far. Here's two that we feel really capture Sophia's work and our direction with the book. These would not exist without the magic of our resident publicity whiz (read: that means Publicity Director, so contact her if you want ARC's in the future) — Turi.

"Baptism" by Crystal Castles

Listen on Spotify or Apple Music

In my Crystal Castle era again, might re-watch Skins. —Birdy Francis, Managing Director

Couplets: A Love Story by Maggie Millner

Purchase at Macmillan

I've been (fittingly) obsessed with this book since it was released in 2023, and at this point it's tradition to re-read it around Valentine's Day. —Turi Sioson, Publicity Director and Editor

Eros the Bittersweet by Anne Carson

A PDF from someone at UChicago pops up when you Google it... here you go.

I've written a short paper on Couplets/"Ice-Pleasure," one of the essays in this collection, so I wanted to return to the book to read the rest of the pieces. —Turi Sioson, Publicity Director and Editor

The heart-wrenching TikTok edits to "Sailor Song" and "Fable" hooked me. I'm anxiously awaiting her debut album. —Turi Sioson, Publicity Director and Editor

Joan Baez: I Am a Noise (2023) dir. Miri Navasky, Karen O'Connor, Maeve O'Boyle

Available to rent

I am unashamed that A Complete Unknown ruled my mind for weeks after seeing it, but mostly because of my newfound love for Joan Baez. I went searching for as much as I could about her and this documentary had me crying on a recent midnight. —Birdy Francis, Managing Director

KATSEYE & Pop Star Academy

Watch on Netflix

I'm late, but I'm fully immersed in the world of Pop Star Academy and KATSEYE. —Birdy Francis, Managing Director

May December (2023), dir. Todd Haynes

Watch on Netflix

I jumped into this movie with the false idea that it would play out something akin to Ingmar Bergman's Persona because the 1966 film was the main point of comparison within the reviews I had read. I was sorely mistaken. The film is ruthless in pointing out and mocking our cultural dissociation from abuse. As many Letterboxd reviews say, Charles Melton's Oscar snub will go down in the books. —Alex Ramos, Creative Director and Editor

Past Lives (2023), dir. Celine Song

Watch on Amazon Prime

There's something really addicting about pure love that remains across the dividing distance of changing decades and personalities. I have a what-if person who I can't help but think of when I watch this. —Turi Sioson, Publicity Director and Editor

RESCENE

Listen on Spotify or Apple Music

I missed out on "Pinball" when it came out four months ago and it would have likely landed in my more-than-top 10 releases of 2024 had I listened to it sooner. The group is a clear reaction to the hype around HYBE's Illit and NJZ, formerly NewJeans, in style and substance, though I'd say RESCENE retains a bit more of the K-Pop DNA passed down from its second generation and onwards. The melodies on "Glow Up" are lovely. —Alex Ramos, Creative Director and Editor
